The Eyes Have It!

Today, finally, I’m taking care of myself instead of putting the homestead first. I have an appointment with a local, highly recommended, opthalmologist to do a thorough eye exam and get up to date reading glasses. My last exam was about seven years ago so this is way overdue.

A week ago I lost the most recent pair of reading glasses I had and was forced to scrounge in drawers for older pairs that do not work so well. Trying to read Facebook posts and do my blog on my phone is a real challenge, and even on my laptop it’s only marginally better, so if you catch errors here please forgive me. I am trying to edit a few times before hitting the publish button.

Why do we so often put ourselves last in line when we need things? Is it old habits from the times of parenting when kids needs came first? Is it a wife-y thing from when husbands just had to have whatever and we wanted them to be happy? And now, 26 years after my youngest child turned 18 and 11 years after my last divorce, I realize I’ve still been putting the house needs, pet needs, car needs, and farm needs ahead of my own.

So it’s my turn!

Fortunately, I live in a place where high quality care is very affordable. A full blown exam by this highly sought after doctor, who is also an eye surgeon, is the equivalent of $60 US. I don’t know what glasses will cost yet, I’ll post that in a later blog, but it doesn’t matter. I’m taking care of myself now and I HAVE to be able to see so I can write and paint. Distance is still ok, but close up is impossible.

As we get older it becomes even more important to have regular medical check ups. The parts we were given too many decades ago are starting to wear out and ongoing maintenance is a necessity. As with my jeep, when the engine light comes on, pay attention!

So if you’ve been putting self care off and tending to other things, it’s time to change your priorities. Feel free to give me your feedback because I want to hear that you’re doing good things for you!

And don’t forget to watch my youtube videos at www.youtube.com/@ranchodellago2021 to follow along with how life on the homestead is going. It’s always an adventure,

Blessings!
